Guidelines: - take turns making up a few sentences to tell a story - anything anyone posts is cannon to the storyline, no matter how ridiculous it is - introduce characters and concepts along the way

There once lived a young boy who lived in a forest. He did not have any family, but over time the forest became his family. At the age of 7, he encountered a carnivorous plant.

The plant wafted a hand-like portion of its foliage, seemingly beckoning the boy to approach. Cautiously, the boy inched closer. Utilizing his miraculous ability to speak fluent English despite a complete lack of formal education, the boy asked "Who are you?". The plant - even more miraculously - responded "Reginald the Ravenous, but my friends fall me Reggie. Who might you be?"

The boy had never been given a name before. He thought quietly for a few moments, but his thoughts were interrupted by Reggie "Boy, do you not have a name?" The boy shook his head. Reggie began to rub a leaf along the underside of his flowers, as if pondering, and responded "Well, we'll have to give you one. How does Kai sound?"

The boy repeated the name aloud as a warm sensation spread through him. "It's settled then, pleased to meet you Kai!" interjected Reggie once again, who leaned forward slightly and continued, "Say...hold still for a tick, will ya?". Kai felt a cold shiver run up his spine as Reggie salivated; he seemed ready to lunge out. Before Kai could react, Reggie's startlingly long tongue darted towards his feet. Certain he was done for, Kai wondered if he'd be swallowed whole or chomped into pieces. He halted his speculation when he looked up and saw Reggie devour a melon-sized beetle. Reggie sighed "Ahhhhhhh! That's the stuff! Thanks for not spooking it kid".

"Well, I would love to stay and chat with you Reggie, but I really have to get going."
"Hmmm..?" Reggie chomped on his snack.
"Past the forest wall, I hear there are people! I haven't seen another person like me ever, did you know that Reggie?" Kai said as he stretched and sat on an uprooted tree trunk, bathed in sunlight.
"Where exactly might that be, Kai?" Reggie mumbled through bites of beetle.
"The fuzzy cave." said Kai.
Kai sat up and perked his ears. Various birds chirping and calling out friends and family. Nearby, a jaguar stalks it's prey.
"I really need to get going Reggie, thank you for the name!" Kai called as he ran off into the belly of the forest.
"That kid.." gulped Reggie.
"Forgets everytime..."

Murum forest is quite unique. It's roughly oval in shape, and about twice as long as it is wide. At it's narrowest point, it would take 2 days on foot to traverse. Completely enclosed within a steep mountain range, the only feasible entrance/exit is the "Fuzzy Cave", so named for the thick moss that covers it's interior from floor to ceiling.
The cave is said to split off into a maze of diverging tunnels that can disorient even the most seasoned of voyagers. That's not to say that those who can keep their bearings are without peril; the cave is home to a number of frightening creatures.
Kai decided he'd worry about all of that once he arrived. For now, he would focus on gathering supplies along the way.

He would need firewood and some local fruits and nuts to eat. Maybe he would have an opportunity to catch a squirrel or mouse to eat for tonight but could make do with the basics.
He had been walking until the Sun got low in the sky. He had found some smalls sticks for his fire along with dry grass to start it. He had collected plenty of berries, local blue ones, which tasted very good to Kai. He knew that he could also cook them for a little added sweetness and to make sure that he wouldn't get sick. Before eating, he praised the forest Gods for his safe travels and nourishment. Kai knew all too well how unforgiving the forest could be. The Sun began to rest its head against the bosom of the horizon when Kai settled into a tree nearby. He let his campfire slowly burn out as he watched the stars above him slowly fade to black.

Kai faded slowly into sleep. Every night in his dreams, a dark figure approaches him. The figure always appears to be female, with skin that reflects the night sky. Each night, the woman settles herself behind Kai, guarding and protecting him. She wraps her arms around him; her midnight skin providing warmth much greater than that of the campfire, despite its color. Her hair often shimmers in the moonlight, twinkling like stars.
Throughout the dream, she sings lullabies in a language he doesn't understand. Most times, in his dreams, he will fall asleep again to these songs. However, this night was different. As she sang, visions began to appear above the fire. Kai saw an image of himself crawling through the fuzzy cave. Her song intensified, and he saw himself scramble into a corner of the cave. A large monster covered in what looked like fire charged at him, and he screamed.
Kai woke up covered in sweat. The sun was high in the sky and the fire had died long ago. He stood up and began dusting himself off, wiping tears from his eyes. As he dusted his shoulder, he found a long strand of silver hair, about 3 feet long.

"Who is she... a goddess?" wondered Kai, holding the hair up to the light "Is this really hers?... was she really here?" he continued. He shook his head in an attempt to gain his composure; he didn't have time to spare on dreams, especially with hours of daylight already gone. For a moment he considered discarding the hair strand into the charred remnants from the fire, but instead he spooled it around his finger and tucked it into the pouch strung across his shoulder. After gathering the rest of his few possessions, Kai set out once more for the caves.
Less than a day's walk away, he hoped to make camp near the entrance, then make passage in the morning. As he walked and ate some of his gathered provisions, Kai was growing irritated by the rattling of loose items in his pocket. He stopped for a moment to try and shift some things around to stop the noise, and suddenly became aware of a shuffling sound behind him. The shuffling stopped abruptly, and nothing was there when Kai looked over his shoulder. It easily could have been some leaves blowing in the wind, but Kai couldn't help but feel as though he was being watched. For now, he decided it was best to continue on.

Finally reaching the mouth of the Fuzzy Cave, Kai crouched behind a few rocks and listened intently. He could hear the shuffling now and it sounded like it was looking for him, as the shuffling came into the cave entrance and stopped. Kai picked up a rock and readied himself for battle. The rustling sounds moved closer to the rocks where Kai was hiding and Kai tensed up. Wide eyed, he looked up and saw a lonely squirrel, twitching it's nose in the air towards Kai. Kai sighed heavily with relief and remembered he had nuts and fruits in his pocket. He took some out and fed them to the squirrel who immediately stuffed them down. The squirrel then ran out and into the trees. Kai looked around and could see the cave entrance, tall, almost 3 times Kai's height and it looked like it stretched out into a dark abyss to Kai. Smelling cooked meat in the air, Kai knew the humans were nearby.
